make/make install freeze
Hey all,
Recently ive tried installing a few packages using the ./configure make make install Installation method. However, it always freezes? It gets part way through make or make install and then the everything just freezes, i cant change terminals(?) to kill the pid or anything. Any ideas on why this is doing so? |
Does it freeze after make or make install ?
Are you in X when it freeze, if yes which X, KDE ? |
My appologies, i should have been more specific. It freezes during the installations, and its not only when im in X.

What is your filesystem, reiserfs ?
Do you run slackware 10.1 or slackware current, if slackware current, did you upgrade glibc and all ? Any error in /var/log/syslog ? Did you use top command to see if there is not a process that eat all your resource ? Also what is your machine spec (processor + ram) |
I run slackware 10.1 on reiserfs.
Specs: P4 @ 2.4GHz Running /var/log/syslog (as root) gives me permission denied, running it through pico gives thousands of lines. Hope that helps |

Code:
Jul 28 19:04:26 subby kernel: shpchp: shpc_init : shpc_cap_offset == 0 |
Add shpchp and pciehp to /etc/hotplug/blacklist with :
Code:
echo shpchp >> /etc/hotplug/blacklist |
Unfortuantly that didnt work.
I tried to install CUPS yet again, and it froze during make. |
Nothing is magic :p
That should have stopped the errors that fill your /var/log/syslog though I assume you wail a little time before consider the system is frozen, right ? Now what is the output with : Code:
tail -n 20 /var/log/syslog |
Quote:
Code:
root@subby:~# tail -n 20 /var/log/syslog |
Now what is this USB device the system complain about ?
Maybe post the output with : Code:
/sbin/lspci | grep -i usb |
Code:
root@subby:/# /sbin/lspci | grep -i usb Code:
root@subby:/# lsmod back in. Ive done that now and restarted. Code:
james@subby:~$ /sbin/lspci | grep -i usb |
You don't need to reboot when pluging and unpluging usb devices
(I usually look at dmesg command output before and after I plug an usb drive to see how it goes) Did you try to unplug the usb device before attempt a make install ? (sounds weird I know, but anyway...) You are sure that the system freeze on make install but not on make aren't you ? |
Nope it freezes on both, weird huh?
And yes to the unplug of USB. Oh well, enough for one night, sleep time :P. Thanks very much for your help. |
