mailx problem

I know this is going to sound really stupid, but I just can't understand...

I'm new to Linux.

Whenever I try to send mail locally using mailx, it just doesn't go through. I don't get it. I say, mailx root and type in whatever, it gives me EOT at the end of it, and when I check root's mailbox, there's nothing there from the user I sent it with.

(using slackware 12.1)
