Mail client
 

With end of Seamonkey and Thunderbird getting near, I am looking for an email client. One not related to particular desktop environment. Meaning not for KDE, GNOME or, maybe, GNUstep specific.

I know about Claws and Sylpheed, they are fine, I used them in the past. I've heard of Fossamail, which was discontinued. I know about Mutt and Alpine, used them at work briefly.

Is there anything else ?

Do not confuse a transition to community support with "end of life".

You might try the email client within emacs, called rmail. I used it for a year and found it to be quite good.

There's also one called geary. Not sure about how "related" it is to Gnome; it does appear on the Gnome wiki, but I don't think it's tied to Gnome. Anyway, it's pretty (I am told), but not very good.

There are also options, if you're adventurous, of a custom installed web-based clients, like Roundcube. Install it on a server, hook it into your email server or service, and it's an email client you can use nearly anywhere.

Opera 12 had a great email client. If you disable or hide all the browser elements, and configure the mail client to prefer plain text, it should be safe.

Sorry this is a little incomplete as an answer but I seem to recall you have that Alpine was unable to send email through my hosting provider. Something about a protocol difference and no sign of it changing. A great shame as I' quite like to go command-line for email...
I echo the above about Thunderbird not being deab though -- my (admitedly ignorant and biased) view is it seems to be the only email application out there and stands alnost alone against the webmail crud.

I'm not sure about the premise of the question, but I like mutt. It's not perfect, but it works well enough and I prefer text-based interfaces over GUIs.

I can understand that Thunderbird might survive in its current form, there is not much going on the mail client "scene". But Seamonkey ? At some point there will be HTML 6 standard. Who will implement it for Seamonkey ?

If Seamonkey switches to new Firefox code base, what will happen to mail component ? Currently, browser and mail component seem to have very much in common....

Yeah same here. I stopped running Thunderbird because it's very bloated to check a few email accounts. Install abook and you are good to go on an address book too.

I abandoned Thunderbird after many years when they tried to enforce "Account Creation Wizard". They offered paid email account on the same page. My impression was that they were deliberately making life harder for people using email providers not recognized by the wizard in order to persuade them to sign up for the sponsors.

I hope that community support is going to remove wizard. I am not considering Thunderbird an option as long as wizard is there. I am using Seamonkey at the time, but I am worried about its future.

Despite being a heavy KDE Plasma user, my mail client is claws-mail. Works really nice. Not perfect, but does the job and does it *very* well.

I also like Mutt.

Ive used Claws-Mail for many years with no problems, its quick, efficient, simple and does what its supposed to do---be a mail client. Its also great for archiving large amounts of emails.

The OP says he already knows about mutt, and was looking for other options. I can't resist, though, but to cast another vote of confidence. Mutt is very good. I'm quite content with it.

And there is VM (https://launchpad.net/vm) as well as Gnus (http://www.gnus.org/manual/gnus_toc.html) which views e-mail in a fashion similar to newsgroups (http://www.gnus.org/manual/gnus_84.h...n-a-Newsreader). Both of those require emacs.
