Unless I am missing something, with iTunes everything is tied to your account. If you lose/forget your password you can have Apple reset it by answering the security questions that in theory you would have provided upon account registration. And if there is a problem with those, they can also apparently ping your iTunes client on any device you have registered, popping up a message for you to click OK or something.

My wife uses a Mac and we replaced it last year and had some trouble with getting back into iTunes to access purchased content but it was all resolved over the phone going through a process like that. Mind you, I'm not saying it was a good process as it was very frustrating, but it did work in the end.
