I guess I will wait until the new packages are fully tested. This is a minor thing - I am curious as what I did wrong with my installation if it is just attributed to me.

If I test it alone I doubt it will be ever fully tested
also, in this batch, some new versions (there's one of menu-cache, for example) of the components had many bug fixed, so that maybe can help.
BTW, lxpanel still got hundred of bugs open in the bugtracker, so it can be also you hit one of them (the maintainer is a little busy ATM, so it will need some time to fix them).
I was referring to your installation also because I read your previous topic about blender and seen that you got many third party applications an libraries, so can be also something related/introduced by that.
