Lost 3d rendering

I seem to have lost 3d rendering and I have no idea what I have done to lose it. 3ddesktop was working and now it isn't. Using 22.6 kernel with an NVIDIA driver

alan@LavanKossot:~/documents/linux_docs/slackware_iso$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

I must have done something silly to lose it but I do not know how to investigate what it is I have done. I have not installed a new kernel.

Re-installed the NVIDIA driver and it is working again. I think there was a problem with a symbolic link.

I had the same/similar problem w/NVIDIA drivers when I upgraded from Slack10.2 -> 11.0

it seems there was a symbolic link in the X11 path that the NVIDIA installer created. I have a thread here about it but it was very long i think.

If you upgrade the X server you need to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

Well one possible cause then was that I had updated x11 following the latest slackware security alert.

When I realised that 3d rendering was lost the first thing I did was suspect that the upgrade was responsible so I downgraded back. This did not cure the problem but I might try the upgrade again to see if the same thing happens.

Every few months GLX will stop working on my machine due to some missing files or broken links, so I need to reinstall the NVIDIA driver.

I have no idea why it happens.

[http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi... this happened

I definitely think its related to a symbolic link that NVIDIA makes to some xorg driver.

seems we know the culprit.

if you upgrade can you try and find the changed link and post it? for future reference?

perhaps if we know the link that needs to be made reinstalling nvidia would not be required, but simply regenerating the link.

when it happened to me I forged ahead w/o writing it down. else I would tell you to try that.

If you change the X server the nvidia X driver needs to be recompiled anyways.
the nvidia drive has two parts the kernel driver and the X driver. I you change the kernel or X you need to recompile it. not reinstalling the nvidia driver after
changing X has caused X to crash on me more than a few times.
