Looks like I'm going with the Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 series card. I've decided that I'm not really interested in playing Doom III after playing it on a friend's rig. This should be my final configuration for a long while and I like the older games myself.

Doom III was a lot of hype, IMHO. It was just the same level over and over again.

fx5500 256meg

Works really well with Half Life2, UT2004, and Americas Army. 11000fps+ in glxgears

Buck fifty @ be$t buy and even cheaper @ New Ogg. I sometimes go for Be$t buy due to the no hassle exchange policy at my local branch.

ATi and Linux, it isn't as bad as people talk:

Here's my dual boot box:
PIII Copermine 1GHz
512MB SDRAM 133
Intel DB i815 MBO
SB Live!

Slackware 10, Xorg 6.7, 2.6.9-custom kernel (clean, no patches)
fglrx 3.14.6, no patches or anything, just this:
X configuration done with fglrxconfig with everything default but agp gart module which is external, Intel's

glxgears 2915 FPS constantly (no oscillations)
glx_fglrxgears 440 FPS
Quake III timedemo, demo four (with sound on) 77.8 FPS, more than 100FPS average on all maps 1024x768 with game quality options on highest.

I'd say good results considering that performance of the card is limited by other components. I had Gainward GF3 TI 200 GS before (which is better than FX 5200) and I can see the performanse increase with Ati.

Geforce 6600 is a must have for any serious linux user who wants decent 3d acceleration. Doom 3 runs well even on Geforce 4 series however if you want full enjoyment don't even look at anything older than Geforce 5900XT and since Geforce 6600 costs only $20-30 more I think you know what to get.

BTW stay away from ATi. You don't need an ancient kernel and magic rituals in your life to make overpriced hardware work properly.

Doom III was a lot of hype, IMHO. It was just the same level over and over again.
I agree with that. Only ID software can afford such insult on gaming community.

Doom 3 was one of the best games i'v played in YEARS (then again, i continuly say that the BEST game on earth is the orginal doom, which it is to me at least :P). Anyway onto the recommendation. I'd suggest a GeForce 6600 or 6800 (GT model). Both are VERY good cards with very high proformance.
