Well I upgraded my old 8-way server which worked perfectly on slackware 10.1 to a 16 way and when I run top, this is what I see. It's a IBM x445.

mmmmm i spent E300,- on my server with Slack!
and it performs pretty well, what is your's supposed to do?

A machine like that is wasted as a server. I'd put it on my desktop and enable all the flashy GUI effects pronto!

yup, or you can play Doom3, UT2004 or the upcoming UT2007 like there were no tomorrow!

That's such an expensive machine! Hope you also have installed a big-really-freaking-huge ERP system and a decently-huge-with-at-least-a-coupe-of-Terabytes database with thousands of users or all that machinepower is wasted

Sorry to disappoint you, but that's a kernel feature, any distro
will do that (provided the kernel is new enough, so comparing
to DeadRat 7 wouldn't be fair). That Slack can too to me is only
natural.

Anyway, what kind of business do you own to require such a
box? :)

Pr0n server?

The server is not a waste. Thousands of people use it. It's a server that certain banks use to mange people who owe them money.

I know any distro would probably work but I use slackware.

We have over a terabyte of space as we have 16x146 SCSI hard drives for it but I think the database is only about 600 gigs. We run php, apache and my sql the most on it.

I don't think the server is a waste because now it takes 1 seconds to load the stuff it has to as before it took about 10 seconds.

First day was rough. Load average went up to about 51 at certain times of the day so I worked late and tweaked with it a bit to see how it will run today.

BTW, my company did spend that much on a server but we need the horsepower it provides.

It shows that Slack is perfect for bussiness use, in contrast to what some articles have be claiming without much basis.

do you own the company? :}

Btw, the company I work for recently purchased a SAN with
28 FC HDDs ;} for their Oracle database...

I seem to recall an old post asking for references on who used Slackware for commercial purposes - would you mind writing up a quick business case for _why_ you chose Slackware as your distribution for this business critical server, how it performs, and outline some of your experiences?

With all the forks off Slackware and the recent battering it took in a review ("Does Slackware still matter?" article), it'd be most beneficial if the community could come up with a set of reference cases to clearly demonstrate the strengths of Slackware.

Investing $300k in a server to run Slackware on seems like a (too good to be true) business case...
