log files

I know logrotate and /var, but is there a program that lets you look at the system log files with some kind of organization? I always seem to want to look for more info. Every once in a while my system will crash and I try to look for reasons, but I feel that I'm not looking in the right place.

Perhaps you just need to get familiar with which log logs what, then you can use text-editing tools to find what you need. A few important ones to get familiar with are awk, sed and grep.

I'm familiar with awk, grep, and sed. I do need to learn what log file logs what. But I'm also lazy. I have a number of different distros and sometimes I spend more time administering them than actually using them. Sorta like helicopters. I was looking for a program like "webmin" but for system administration. Anybody know of one?

You might like logcheck and logwatch. If nothing else they will hone your regex skills

Thanks to all. I'm going to take your advice, catkin and TommyC7, and learn more about my system. I'm gonna close this thread.
