Log entry: can someone explain this?


I saw a couple of these a few minutes ago in messages

Nov 21 22:47:13 ano in.identd[29545]: reply to 209.52.147.168: 32898 , 25 : USERID : OTHER :0

Is this a telnet connection? Is so can some break it down for me. I have telnet turned off.

What makes you think it was a telnet connection. telnet uses port 23. This was for port 25, SMTP.

Heh I meant mail. Anyways one of my scripts sent out an welcome email and the new users ISP seems to have my ISP's blacklisted? Jsut deleted the queued mail and all's back to normal

This is a line logged by identd about user with uidnumber 25: the smtp user (which is managing your mail queue). The other side asked your identd about the identity of user number 25 and it replied with a harmless message i.e. it told nothing of value.
However you might want to turn identd off if you don't want any information about your box to leak onto the internet.
