lockup at login

So here is the deal. I have a linux box that has been running Slackware 10.2 for a few months now with no problems. Last night however I was messing around with cygwin, ssh -Y, and ssh -X from my windows machine trying to get X to work remotely (it doesn't but that is a problem for a different post). Later I shutdown the linux box for the night (using the correct shutdown procedure). Now when I try to boot, it locks up just before the login prompt in runlevel 3 and 4. The last message on the screen is about hdparm -d1 which I have in rc.local and has been working for months. Usually the login prompt would be right after the hdparm message. I can get logged in as root if I start in single user mode but I really don't know what I looking for. Anyone have any suggestions?

If the hdparm message wasn't an error, what's in rc.local after the line that runs hdparm?

hdparm is the only thing in rc.local and it has been there for months with no problem so I don't believe that it is the cause of the problem.

try look at /etc/rc.d/rc.4
i think GDM stucked just like i did.

i remove the execute permission on gdm and set on kdm and it worked again. Here's my blog post: http://slackblogs.blogspot.com/2006/...m-problem.html
