Loading modules
 

When I first got Slackware I had everything sound and internet. After upgrading to kernel 2.6.0 I have no sound and I cant go on the internet. I enabled ALSA drivers as modules and all the net hardware as modules too. So iam guessing this has to do with the modules. I went to the alsa website and they dont have my sound card but I know its supported since it worked before the kernel compilation. When I type in alsamixer I get .......no such device. I cant remember the exact error.

When I type in ifconfig eth0 I get

"eth0 error fetching interface information:device not found"

So can someone help me with this Iam not really new to Linux but I never had to deal with Loading and Unloading modules are any of these problems Iam experiancing.

Well, if you actually supplied what type of hardware it is, manufacturer, model, and possibly chipset, we could be more help. Other than that, were as clueless as you are as were not psychic you know!

your probably going to have to load your modules...

modprobe 8139too

will get your nic up....

ifconfig till your hearts content now...

if you are going to load alsa drivers you don't want to compile alsa into the kernel. Just compile sound support.... no alsa or oss...

thanks man now I dont have to reboot to windows everytime I want to go on the net lol.

My question is how do you know what the module is called to load?

My second question I added support for ALSA and I think OSS emulation when I was configuring the kernel so what should I do now?

I dont see anything running with sound when I do an lsmod.

I have the same trouble. Making the 2.6.0 kernel correctly is a big problem because you can't simply use the config file from the 2.4.22 kernel. Fortunately dial-up access works even if you make a lot of mistakes :) Maybe you forgot to enable the pppoe driver.

Everything works now all I did was I download the ALSA drivers and did the modprobe 8139too.

I had the same problem, and I solved as follow:

Since modules utils now uses /etc/modprobe.conf for the aliases rathern that the old /etc/modules.conf, I added alias etho 8139too
and all the aliases that you can find in the alsa documentation for you specific hardware.

Just switched over to Mandrake 9.2 from XP. Good thing I kept a dual boot. I'm having a time with everything (still waiting for manual). I have a wg311 wireless that isn't eazily supported by linux. downloaded the madwifi driver they say works but it requires compiling then loading Hal, scmall and shallow hal. Unfortunately I don't know how to load a module. fiqured out the compling with "make" but don't know how to load a module. sorry I know it's a week question, but I don't even use dos and batch files anymore using window
