Question Lmsensors for desktop. Any point?

In the course of browsing this site I have come across discussion of lmsensors.

Is this just for laptops? Is there any point in trying lmsensors on a desktop? Would it enable me to run my machine quieter?

And a question in passing. I saw lmsensors on the sourceforge site. There is tgz package under 10.2 for 64 bit. Is this just for slamd64 users or could I running a slackware 10.2 on an AMD 64 and a kernel I havecompiled for AMD 64 use that package?

Which can be useful. Just this weekend I had a desktop reboot mysteriously. The CPU fan locked up. If I'd had a temp readout dockapp installed in WindowMaker or had been running Gkrellm) I would have seen it coming.
