Just imagine my excitement when I was able to install nvidia driver in a
optimus laptop with linux.Started xfce4 successfully.
glxinfo | grep -i renderer gave "OpenGL renderer string:GeForce GT 740M/PCie/SSE2".
Ran glxspheres up to 1400+ FPS
glxgears up to 11,000+ FPS
If most of you have achieved this already,sorry to bore you,but at least I have cought up.
Specs for this setup
1.Laptop HP Envy 17-J010TX NBK
2.OS Slackware-current updated with xorg-server-1.15.O, Mesa-10.1.0,xrandr-1.4.2
3.Special files
From(arch-thanks)---xrandr xxxx xxx xxx
auto
From(Gentoo-thanks)---xorg.conf for optimus nvidia driver
Same setup in 3 different partions with different kernels using nvidia-337.12
linux-3.10.36 compiles without a patch
linux-3.13.9 and 3.14.0 both require lock-debugging.patch to driver before compiling successfully.

Congratulations on your success. It looks like you've been doing well with Slackware since your two threads last year.

Isn't it interesting how we often get excited when something works as it designed. I think it's because the much of the time things don't work and we're pleasantly surprised when they do work.

So much of the time with computers problems appear and we have to put in some effort and learn new things before we're finally successful. Success after solving some problems is more satisfying than success without much effort. (Of course it's also nice that once in a while things just work. )

Since you registered with LQ in 2006 and you've posted two threads in LQ in 2013 you're probably aware already that several (many?) of the LQ members that use this Slackware forum, like you, were born in the first half of the last century.

I am curious about your way to deal with nvidia optimus. I have a Asus laptop with optimus too and i found the way to work only with Bumblebee.
Are you using Bumblebee too?

Bumblebee not installed in any of the partitions mentioned in the post.VirtualGL is installed only to get glxspheres.
Please try as mentioned in the post.I hope more advanced users will explain my setup so I can understand how I stumbled on it and help you in the process.The only difference between official slack-current and mine are the updates mentioned.

With optimus you have a couple of options:
1. bumblebee: https://github.com/WhiteWolf1776/Bumblebee-SlackBuilds

2. offloading: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...E/randr14.html

I use bumblebee so I can only run the nvidia card when I need to. Gets quite a bit of extra battery life when I don't need it.

I do not have bumblebee installed in the partitions in my first post.I do have 2 separate partitions with bumblebee, one with kde and one with xfce and I use these where I need to conserve power.Works well. Bumblebee development appears to have stopped for a while. My current kernel is 3.10.36. I have not been successful with updating to other kernels and bumblebee.?future
I also have 2 partitions with dri-prime,xfce and kde.While kde works with desktop effects in bumblebee, in dri-prime there is kwin problems with no desktop effects.
I attempted offloading setup just for the fun of it-
I also looked into nvidia-prime(ubuntu),too many dependencies-not too keen on it.

The bumblebee issue may be bbswitch. You'll need the latest version of that to be compatible with the newer kernels.. and even then, there is a limit.

Most of the dev has been in primus and bbswitch lately. Check your versions with the links above.

I had not looked at the bumblebee link you gave in you first post-I just assumed it was the other one.When I got to the link,I was pleasantly surprised it was new site.I am downloading the zip file and sources.Will let you know how it is going.Now I am assured bumblebee project will continue.
