Linux GPU driver problem

Hello guys,

I installed Slackware 14.0 and have a problem installing my gpu driver. I have an i5 3570k so i am trying to install the drivers for HD4000. I tried using the drivers from intel's site but they dont seem to work. I run them but nothing happens.

Also i cant seem to change my resolution to 1280x1024, it stays on 1024x768. I tried checking my xorg.conf file but i find 3 different cards, but i only have 1.

Is there any way to check if my gpu is properly installed?

I am new with linux so a little help will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

You probably didn't need to install any extra drivers. Any modern linux distribution should support that GPU out of the box.

To figure out what's wrong now, please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Oh well, i guess i messed up everything now... I will just reinstall slackware, it was fresh install anyway, and i will get back to you.
After a fresh install, do i need to run X -configure? or is it not necessary?

you should be able to just startx or init 4 and get the x login prompt. no config needed anymore for the built in drivers.

I believe the driver that supports the Intel HD 4000 chip is xf86-video-intel which ships with Slackware.

Yes i think you are correct, but checking at intel site, it lists more drivers than that. Here, https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloa...-stack-release
It has the xf86 driver as 2d driver but also other different ones for other purposes.. little confusing..

understand, intel is a contributor to the linux kernel and many of the projects. They want their drivers included, and in my exp, they have been. My intel for ivy bridge (4000) needs no config at all to work with X.

You can run without an xorg.conf file, but if you want proper hardware feature support, you will want to have an xorg.conf file located in /etc/X11.

Ok i reinstalled.
In the /etc/X11/ directory now i only have xorg.conf-vesa file, i tried changing the resolution there but nothing works.

I tried running X -configure, but it fails, telling me that "Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices". It did create a xorg.conf.new file although i havent copy it yet. And again it has 3 monitors and 3 devices and 3 screen sections. The devices have same busid and identifiers "modesetting", "intel", "vesa".

You should be able to change resolution using whatever X desktop tool you wish. Which desktop are you running and I'll try to give you the exact place in that menu. Generally, just look for a 'system settings' and screen or display entry.

You don't have to setup the resolution or anything else in xorg files anymore for these cards.

There is something very odd going on here... Try using just this as your xorg.conf file:

Code:
Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz",
        ### <percent>: "<f>%"
        ### [arg]: arg optional
        #Option "DRI" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorKey" # <i>
        #Option "VideoKey" # <i>
        #Option "FallbackDebug" # [<bool>]
        #Option "Tiling" # [<bool>]
        #Option "LinearFramebuffer" # [<bool>]
        #Option "Shadow" # [<bool>]
        #Option "SwapbuffersWait" # [<bool>]
        #Option "TripleBuffer" # [<bool>]
        #Option "XvMC" # [<bool>]
        #Option "XvPreferOverlay" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DebugFlushBatches" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DebugFlushCaches" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DebugWait" # [<bool>]
        #Option "HotPlug" # [<bool>]
        #Option "RelaxedFencing" # [<bool>]
        #Option "BufferCache" # [<bool>]
	Identifier "Card1"
	Driver "intel"
	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
Then show us both your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and the output of 'dmesg' please.
