I'll tell you something: these "reputable specialists" are simply meteorologists, who have gone out of hungry inventing something stupid, but of effect.

The Earth goes through heating and cooling cycles. For billions of years. Next on is an Ice Age, on thousand years.

And it will continue like this, another billion years, when it will become like Venus, due to the Sun's rise...

No, the earth has not gone through this kind of change anytime in the last 4 million years at least.

Seems Darth Vader doesn't quite understand that such environmental devastation as clear cutting tropical rainforests or the use of CFCs to name a few examples has on the climate and ecosystems. Anyways, this topic is about ram, not environmental science. So I will add that I'm glad slackware was not included in such a silly list.

Given those figures I must have stuffed something up somewhere along the line. Although I've disabled all I can and haven't enabled any additional services.

htop shows 1.24GB used - slack 14.2, KDE. Firefox, Terminal, Dolphin, and Skype running.

Firefox: ~315MB
Web: ~256
Plasma Desktop: ~86MB
Skypeforlinux: ~38MB

Ouch.

Its worth remembering that some programs like firefox will use more ram if its available.

True - but even straight after booting I've noticed Slackware uses a fair bit more resources than Debian.

It's a moot point really anyway, it seems heaps snappier even with KDE/plasma. I should have switched years ago.

Like others said, that is the result of the software and hardware being run, not the distro. As you demonstrated, its easy to change out the default desktop environment or even using just a window manager. Slackware includes several choices out of the box and there are even more ready to be built at SBo. Personally I use a minimal tiling wm (Spectrwm) and my desktop experience is quite fast.

Well as I said, it seems faster than my old Deb install even using KDE so it's no wonder something like Fluxbox, XFCE or yes Spectrwm would be faster still

I don't know what other services I can get rid of. So far the only rc's loaded at boot (ignoring rc.S etc) are acpid, alsa, cgproxy, cgmanager, consolekit, firewallrules, fuse, gpm, and the logging deamons and udev. I've disabled execute permissions on all the others.
