Linux 64 bit question

I am running an Athlon 64 processor, and I recently installed Slackware 10. I compiled the 2.6.8 kernel, and I set my processor type to AMD64 in the kernel config. I went to nvidia's website to get the nforce and geforce AMD64 drivers. When I try to run these files, I get an error saying that I these drivers are made for a Linux-x86_64 environment, and I'm running a Linux-x86 environment. So obviously the drivers aren't recognizing the fact that I'm running a 64 bit processor. What else do I need to do besides setting the kernel config to AMD64 to actually get a 64 bit linux evironment?

you can re-install the "default" kernel that came with Slack10(2.4.26)
and re-compile it and see if that solves the problem............Pat V. put that kernel in there for a reason..........it is stable ...........

just because the kernel is compiled with 64-bit support with your processor, does not mean that everything else is, such as Xorg, and every other package that comes with Slack 10, just download the 32-bit drivers from Nvidia and use those.
