Linux 3.0-rc1 has been released!

Good bye Linux 2.6. We will never see Linux 2.6.40 ;)

The announcement by Linus Torvalds is here. Hello Sneaky Weasel!

This has been reported on ConceivablyTech and Phoronix.

What is so extraordinary about changing the number? The inside of the kernel remains the same. There are not revolutionary changes. So what is the excitation all about??

Let's hope kernel v3 is better received than gnome v3

It's just an cosmetic change.

BUT, it's a cosmetic change which will break an incredible amount of 3d party sources/packages/kernel modules ... ;)

Stay tuned and you will laught with tears! ;)

looks like for this -rc1, besides the tarball being named 3.0-rc1, the internal numbering is still the "old-way"

I think having once in a while an event like this could be a nice occasion to review thingies (leaving the pain aside). ;)

It is second stupid thing I know Torvalds did, IMHO.

What is the first ? :)

jheengut 05-30-2011 06:44 AM

Can it compile on slackware 13.1 or 13.37???

FeyFre 05-30-2011 06:59 AM

witek, if I post it it will be violation of LQ rule:

Why not? Just try ;)

codge 05-30-2011 08:25 AM

Just compiled it and there are no problems.

honeybadger 05-30-2011 08:28 AM

@witek... ummm... have you tried to send a patch to the kernel.org? You would be amazed to the demand of quality they want in the code.
If Linus deems this as the next step then ot is the next step. I believe the man because he tells things as they are.
And yes, this is a cause of exicitement.
