Linux 2.6.xx Compile Errors
Greetings, since everyone says to start a new thread here goes, I have since the First 2.6.x Kernels came out, tried wirth limited success to get teh Kernel to compile right. Well everyone says I am doing it all wrong. so let me ask this and don't say but I am doing it wrong, Pay VERY close attention to the Questions.
1: If I have no IEEE1394 installed, should I have it enabled in the kernal compile? 2: If I have ONE Processor and only one, should SMP (Symmetrical Processor) be enabled? 2A:I have an AMD K6-2 500, in the default settings the Processor type is Intel Pentium 4, should that be changed?? 3: If I am using reiserfs and it is not enabled, and only ext2 and ext3 are in minimal settings, should I just leave it or change it. (I Know to change it) 4: I want ot use IPv6, but it is turned off, Should I leave it or turn it on so I can use it? 5: I have no SCSI Devices installed. I only need the Emulation, should I leave all the Hardware detection enabled? 6:Power Settings APCI If I have it all turned off, then should this be anabled? 7: Ethernet settings, I have a NetworkEverywhere NIC100 and it uses the Tulip drivers, there is a realtek enabled, should I just use that? I realise these are a bit condescending. But understand to date no one has answered my question with any sort of reliability. I get 3 errors they are posted all over the place here so find them and then see. I have gottenthe kernel to go all the way to boot and even usability, but no Network. Then got that to work but then it crashed. The 3 errors are something and I have done exactly as the instructions request. Found here >>>>>> My Errors and Information Posts Scroll down to read all. make clean make mrproper make menuconfig These are all real easy. Now if I leave these as they are, and compile it, then I get Kernel Panic since the hardware setup in the kernel is nto to my system. Now allt hese questions, yes I have made all the changes to accomodate my system. Istill get 3 errors. I have diabled things I think it is being afdfected by, to no success. The README in the Directory is a BASIC redme, it explains how to gzip or bzip extract the files, then it expalins the different types of configurations. make menuconfig make xconfig make gconfgi make oldconfig I have done EXACTLY as all stated here. The only thing that I can see that otehrs don't is the fact that I get the errors and no one else can tell me why. I have put out what I have setup, no one can see, I have given my system configuration, but I guess it is ignored. Try this, want to know my system better, go to www.dfi.com and get the K6BV3+ Rev A+ PDF file and look at how my system is setup. Yes I have it all tweaked out and setup to it's best ability. Everytime I have tried to get this to work and used JUST the way all of you say here, I have had to format my system, and then reinstlal slackware,. then get all my updates and start all over again. So you see, when I do it your way, it really ,messes with my system, if I do it with the adjustments I need, it mostly boots. I have a few issues, but it does boot. EG: Last night because I followed your sio dilligent instructions, I ended up with a 528MB HDD from the 30GB HDD Had to format the drive because of you so descriptive instructions. I have noticed, they leave out something very important, the Actual configuration. Not everyone has what is setup int he defaults. So thta is why I change it, cause I don't have what is in the defaults. So why do I want the defaults if they crash my system? Don't tell me I am doing it all rwrong, cause if you do, then you are telling me that you are wrong too, since I followed your instructions. I understand this all too much now, I did the new format reiserfs but usaed the bare.i this time, well it would not write the lilo.xconf so had to boot off the floopy, well after getting ti all fixed all the updates and everything to get to the desktop, I then edited the lilo.conf and am able to boot with no floppy. Don't discredit me just because I am a new Linux user. Let me see someone else make that happen and not know. |
Ummm .. I don't know how others manage their time,
but I can assure you that I WON'T read your other 160 posts to locate the errors. If you want others to help you I suggest you at least supply links to the posts that describe your errors. Cheers, Tink |

2. No 2A. Yes 3. Change it. 4. Can't use it if it's not enabled 5. Depends. Why do you need emulation? What device will be using it? Kernel does no type of hardware detection, pls explain what you mean. 6. Depends on your system. Enable what you have i.e. desktop has no lid switch etc. 7. No. Quote:

Firstly look at the post initially. Yes I have followed every instruction to the T. No actual content considering the Hardware selections and how to setup things. I am sorry if Ihave an attitude, but 7 times, have I reformatted this system because of a Kernel issue. So think, wouldn't you be a bit upset too. Good thing I know how to copy things from one place to another and keep data intact.
Now, I have made all the needed changes, look at teh look here in the initial post and scroll down to see the information there. The long settings is what I had made the changes to. It is a description of what I have done. Not the final output. so far I have not seen any reasonable answer that is directed at the issue. I have the DFI mainboard docs, and also several otehr things that I have gone through, 3 printed sets of pages for how to from here, Followed them and still no 2.6.XX.X and then to make things worse, it seems that all my requests for finding the errors goes out, oh, they are nothing, don't worry about it. Then why is it, if I leave it, then everything goes out the door and crashes? Last night I reformatted the drive, using the bare.i kerenl and had to initially use a boot disk to get to the system. Well after all the updates and all the installs, got to the lilo.conf file and changed it. No boot floppy now, so how many who have been doing this in the amount of time as me, could do that successfully? Yes I understand this. Sorry again if I am sounding upset, but I am. Read the information and then tell me what I am missing. It has to be something. I have followed all the instructions from here to the letter, Even read them 3 and 4 times to be very sure before even starting this.. So as I see it, if I am doing somehting wrong, it's because the instructions are wrong. |

Frankly, I would suggest to learn how to compile a kernel in a slower rate and
try to not think that format a drive is a solution to fix a kernel problem I suggest you to take a workable config and build and install a kernel from it You reboot, and you enjoy that everything work..After that, make a backup of the kernel, System.map and the .config, then re-configure the kernel with a few option changed, compile it, install it... repeat until you 're satisfied |

From the format of all your posts I think your keyboard must be messed up. Try it with a different keyboard.

The first thing I'll have to ask you where you got the
kernel-source from ... it's not supplied by Slack's first 2 CDs, and the stock kernel from kernel.org doesn't have IEEE1394 enabled by default ... [edit] As far as "and then I get the kernel-panic" goes: it would help if you mentioned what the last thing BEFORE the kernel panic is. [/edit] Cheers, Tink |

so answer that if you would please. No one really has so if you don't it won't be any dissapointment to me. I am told I don't read, well all teh responders to me post they can't get past the first line. so who is reading what? |

I suggest you scroll-up and re-word this ;) All 7 questions have been answered, and I second the responses. Cheers, Tink |

I run the make clean make mrproper make menuconfig work my way through the settings, then exit and save. Make it then starts the make process, and then I get the errors about 3 or 4 minutes into it. I then ctl c and stop the process. I do not let it go any farther till I get a good response as to what the 3 errors are and where they can be turned off. I never get to the make modules_install or make install because I don't want to install something that is not going to work. that is why I posted my as I do it setup and not the output of what it creates, so that someone can tell me what part I am doing wrong. I have looked all over the Setup and found nothing that makes it do that,. I have turned off basically everything and i get those errors, It has something to do with the Kernel source and not me. So if I don't get past the compile stage and these errors occur, then where do they come from? |
