After reading this thread, how can you not indulge in fantasies involving the systemd developers and a very large bus?

We should perhaps clarify this scenario. The very large bus is taking them all to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and is very comfortable, but does not have wi-fi :)

And the bus takes a wrong turn, and they all get eaten by inbred mutant cannibals.

So it is not quite clear to me why Gentoo would need patches.

I talked about ebuild patches, not a rules patches. Ebuild contains information about which packages will be installed to satisfy dependencies. Particular package may depend on other packages either directly or via another package. As well as via system-wide USE flags.

It's unlikely. What would actually happen is this tribe that has existed for thousands of years with unusually high life expectancy is suddenly told that not only is their way of life wrong, they're getting a new one.

Sorry, I don't get. How is this related to ttk's claim that udev has a dependency on systemd, when it is clear (proven by being able to install the latest udev without systemd in Gentoo and Slackware) that this is not the case?
Also, when a Gentoo package has a dependency on udev being compiled with systemd USE-flag then you should file a bug report against that package (if it is indeed not necessary to have udev built with systemd support for that package to work) or (if that dependency is necessary for the package) complain to upstream of that package.
This is neither udev's fault nor evidence for an alleged dependency that hinders anyone from building udev without having to install systemd.

Maybe this isn't the best question, but can eudev (latest version) build with alternative libcs?

I am not aware of anyone having tried that on Slackware. But at least musl and dietlibc are available on http://slackbuilds.org and build material targeting Slackware 14.1 for the latest udev version (including the source) is available here, so someone interested can try.

I think he means the problem of corporate criticism on sponsored forums and other social media. It's where any debate is open, and all the rules are listed but one, the unwritten rule of, "Do not dare criticize our sponsor or employer or you'll have hell to pay."

And to be fair unSpawn, I have witnessed it firsthand on such forums. Nexon Corporation has such rules for the forums it's users have for their games.
