ok here is the deal guys for those of you that have been supporting my cause to get a working system up for me and my father thanks~. Now I am putting my computers milestone on the back burner for my father. As you know his computer was I thought older than mine but all of his drivers work except the wireless card which was bought separately. I looked on the site and it does not even look like Linksys even supports any linux distro. The problem with this is he is going to convert back to Windows if he can't even get his wireless card to work or the computer will lose alot of its purpose since its already limited because the battery dies when its not plugged out.

It will depend on the cards version. I know w/ the Atheros chipsets, they are simple w/ Madwifi and generally work quite well..(ARxx). Realtek and broadcom can be problematic because they often require a firmware upgrade. Really need to figure out the chipset on the device before proceeding.

I'm not sure how to list pcmcia devices in terminal, try plugging the card in, and run
lspcmcia

and see if it kicks out the chipset of the wireless card.

is it Slackware 12.1? if so, add bcm43xx to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, install firmware as written here ;
you should have b43 driver loaded instead of bcm43xx now. Then configure your wireless connection through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf or wpa_supplicant.

this problem is going to have be put on hold for the moment the computer crashed its saying login as root to adjust fdisk or something... it does not boot anymore and endlessly restarts. the previos post was the last thing I did before It crashed ;\.

What are the specs on this PC? If you're giving the PC to someone else, might be wiser to just set up one of the easier distros on it, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, OpenSuse, etc.

Broadcom is just a pain, IMO.

Hi,
Just pass the 'single' parameter at boot. That way you can repair the filesystem. You could use the install cd/dvd to boot and perform the maintenance. Once the filesystem is repaired then you should not have any problems.

It sounds like you are having shutdown problems. What filesystem are you using? How are you shutting down?
