Limited mime icons for Gnome
 

This is a Gnome install from source on a Slackware 10.2 system... I'm really baffled here and think this forum might be my best chance for ideas... The official Gnome forum is completely dead otherwise I'd post over there.

Anywho... As the title suggests, I only have about half of my mime-type icons showing up in nautilus even tho they are correctly associated with their respective mime-type as this pic shows:

video, audio, compressed, and numerous others show just fine (correct icons) but C files, headers, README, htm/html, INSTALL, TODO and others just show up as a blank file (I have 'don't show text' set for prefrences). If I change it back to 'show text', they show the icon for plain text files (with text on the icon)..

This is the only problem I have with Gnome and after months of using it, it finally started to get on my nerves bad. Over the years I've come to rely on those icons to quickly identify files in unpacked source tarballs. It's throwing me for a loop now.

I have XDG_DATA_DIRS and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS set to /usr/share in my /etc/bashrc... I've rerun update-mime-database numerous times. I'm stumped. By all rights, acording to my prefrences pic, they should be showing their specific icons..

Just to get this off the 0 reply list... :p

I've accepted I'll probably never figure it out. Started messing around with installing themes (in home directory) from Gnome Look.org and mime types work there. Maybe that has something to do with it. Who knows... This is an upgrade from 2.12 to 2.14 problem tho..

I'm just going to make my own theme or find one I like that's downloadable and modify the icon set to use some of the more familiar /usr/share/icons/gnome set... Lots of time involved but problem solved.

Did you get the icon-naming-utils and XML-Simple perl module in there?
And did you be sure and install the ancient hi-color theme?

Hey... Thanks for the response gnashley. I did not have either progs installed and I am using 0.9 hicolor. I assume you mean 0.8 with regards to 'ancient'? It is rather old and that's why I decided to install the dev 0.9...

Installing XML-Simple-2.14 and then building icon-naming-utils against said Simple had no effect... I tried messing around with the libexec of icon-naming-utils to map gnome/48x48/mimetypes but not sure I really knew what I was doing, it being a new prog and all that I'm not familiar with.

hicolor is nothing but a bunch of empty directories and an index.theme so I'm not sure how rolling back to 0.8 will help matters, especially since all my mimetypes are in 'gnome'.... I suppose I could try it anyway...

I tell you, it's the damndest thing. Don't understand why the properties window displays the icon but Nautilus itself won't.... :scratch:

Sorry, I didn't mean using an older version of the hi-color theme, jus to be sure you have it. The requirements for it is a bit obscure and I thought you might have missed it.
Messing with GNOME is frustrating -hardly ever touch the stuff myself.
