lilo

i dual boot: win98 and slack. (i have to... hard to explain why... perhaps in another thread)

i boot into slack using the cdrom. at the boot prompt:
linux root=/dev/hdd1 ro

the default lilo doesn't have ide-scsi emulation. i edited my lilo.conf script in the / partition. ran /sbin/lilo.

BUT i don't know how to boot from there.
so no ide-scsi emulation. i need this for eroaster to work.

is there any other way?

(it'd be good if the solution has running my edited lilo as i recompiled my kernel as well, but i won't be picky ;) )

I don't know why you dont just install lilo to the mbr and be done with mucking around with boot disks.......

vfs 05-15-2002 07:25 AM

try loading the ide-scsi module (around line 508 of /etc/rc.d/rc.modules). Uncomment this.

Another way is to put:

append="hdd=ide-scsi"

in /etc/lilo.conf

to prevent the drive to be detected by the ide driver.

HTH,

vfs.

because lilo corrupts my mbr. it goes on a infinite 1010101010101.... thing.

i'll check out the rc.modules script.

unfortunately, there's something else wrong and it keeps hanging on both slack and windows after a while of usage. there's a continuous beep and then everything can't move. the screen is stuck, the keyboard doesn't respond, the mouse doesn't move.

so i decided to do a fresh install. just slack on this machine. solves all my problems. the lilo will work.
i just got my hands on a cheap old machine and i'll run windows on that.

oh yea, and thanks for the help.

Sorry for the late entry...does your computer still hang now that you've got rid of Windows? The only time mine ever did that in both Lin+Win was when my CPU was overheating (hadn't noticed the knackered fan...before CPU temperature/fan sensors were standard). Just a thought.

gui10 05-20-2002 05:50 AM

hm... yea i was suspecting some hardware of mine... i haven't switched on my box for long enough to find out if it hangs again since the re-installation. i checked the other fans, they were working. i haven't checked the cpu fan though. i'll go look at it when i get back.

thanks!

this lilo result happened to me a few times....

01010101010101010100101010101010110101010

just reboot use slack cd boot and rerun lilo wait a few secs . .and then reboot and it works.....

I don;t know but it happens a few times thu..

OR what I do is to keep the defaultkernel in the lilo to be able to boot its time my new recompiled kernel is problematic...and crashes..
:D :D :D :D :D :D
