Question Libretto 50ct install (manually)

Heres the situation, i've tried Vector & ZipSlack , both work fine on the little machine but just didn't cut it for what i want, so i started again from scratch, i have an 800 meg HD, so it's cut up like so, 500mb, 32mb, 200mb, rest is for Libretto hibernation.

I installed Zipslack on the 200mb partition, works fine, i have then ftp'd the a group from my Slackware 9 system, the ap group, and the n group aswell, i then tried this, i formatted the 500mb partition to ext2 then i mounted it as /mnt/hd i then ran the following command line from the a group directory:

installpkg -root /mnt/hd *.tgz

doing the same for the ap and n groups.

everything proceeds accordingly, i then install bare.i as the kernel and then try chroot'ing into the newly created install so that i can install lilo as the boot loader. chroot comes back telling me that bash is not an executable or a directory, i proceed on anyhow and do the liloconfig from within the sbin directory of /mnt/hd, after mcedit'ing the lilo.conf file which was saved into the /etc and not /mnt/hd/etc and then saving in the correct place lilo accepts the kernel and all looks good to go, i reboot and watch the kernel go thru it's paces and then bam it turns up agetty not a directory or executable file, errors out because all the processes for the session are used up and then just does nothing.

So my question isn't so much HELP!!!! ARGHHHH but more like what am i missing here? i noticed there is no fstab i also noticed the the files look like they have the right permissions but i'm not sure why it's not working right!

please don't ask me to do a NFS install as ZipSlack refuses to mount a partition i have shared from my Slack9 box, mount just sits and does nothing i tested the share from another install and it mounted fine, if anyone can see where i'm going wrong it'd help, also for those that don't know, i can't run an install from floppies as the libretto has a quirky floppy drive that doesn't get recognised by the linux kernel after the first boot disk (unless i get a patched 2.4.19 kernel)

Any and all help would be appreciated, i'd dearly love to get this little machine running Slack 9 and Xwindows with IceWM.

an update

after thinking about the nfs mount problem for a while i tried installing nfs and portmapper on the zipslack install, and now nfs mounts work fine (yay) have decided that trying to install slack as mentioned above is just a bad idea and have followed the faq info on installing zipslack on an ext2 partition (again), i may evan try setting up a reiserfs partition much later but who knows.

Questions i have now are these :

now that i have zipslack installed and running and am going to add stuff to the install, can i use a Slack kernel? if so what about the file? can i overwrite this with the bare.i

i would like to tidy up the partitions a little bit, as it stands i have a 500 a 32 and a 200 i'd ideally like the 500 to become 700 and then have the swap after it and then libretto hibernation as the last, so how can i join partitions together?
