I see a 6-month old thread same subject. It does not answer my questions.
First, I see "Alien Bob's" package for en-GB libreoffice for 14.1 32-bit. I wonder if there is a 'us' en version; don't see it. If not, I will use the GB version and it will be fine.
There seems to be a dependence on jdk, even with AB's binary package, right? I am having a hard time getting anything workable out of SlackBuild's 'jdk_8u31' package; there seem to be no binaries. The build script needs source, right? But I cannot get the source to download, hit a brick wall. 'Unknown Error'.
I assume this is because of the hint about Oracle's license. However, how do I find a link to 'agree' or whatever? The 'source' links do this: right click and 'save link' gives the 'unknown error' with no link or info how to proceed; left-click gives a *stern warning* about 'untrusted link', which I am little-inclined to ignore. (Again, this is in slackbuilds.org/repository/14.1/development/jdk (8u31).
Help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. (--having fun with new Slackware, got wireless internet and good printing (old HP 6122) working, better than I have ever done in the past...)
Well, as soon as I posted, I found the solution: there is a link to Oracle just above the two 'source' links. Went there, did that, downloading now. Not sure if it is 'source' or binary, however. Getting both the 'rpm' and the 'tar.gz' packs. Very large, about 20 min download. (Internet has slowed down here lately, Montana US.)
You can opt for the open source alternative to Oracle's closed-source JDK.
OpenJDK is built from essentially the same core sources, but Oracle adds some stuff it won't share with the rest of us.
That alternative is called OpenJDK. This package is really built from source on a Slackware machine, as opposed to the Oracle JDK package which is no more than a re-packaging of Oracle's own binary code.
Download location for OpenJDK: http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/openjdk/ . Choose a Slackware architecture and version (32-bit Slackware 14.1 in your case will end up as http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...njdk/pkg/14.1/) and then pick either the JRE or the JDK. The JRE package (Java Runtime Engine) is fine if you are never going to compile Java programs from source. The JDK (Java Development Kit) is needed when you do want to compile Java code from source. Note: the JDK contains the JRE too.
Mister Alien Bob, sir, there are no oracle blobs in your package, are there? (I assumed as much, but this whole oracle talk is making me nervous.) Is it, technically, free?

Both LibreOffice and OpenJDK are free and completely open source (which are the packages Eric provides). If you get the proprietary version of Java, it is considered Oracle Java, and you need to agree to a license to download it.
I've just installed alienBob's 4.4.1 on 32-bit machines and am getting missing libGLU.so.1 errors during the failed startup...googling reveals little of value, so that's why I am asking for clues here...
