[solved] libdvdread/libdvdcss error
 
I have been trying to get dvd playback under Slackware 10.2 (x86). I installed libdvdread, libdvdcss, libdvdnav, and xine-lib from linuxpackages.net; however, when I attempt to play a dvd in Xine, xine craps out (running as root for the moment to ensure proper permissions):

After doing some searching on google and various forums, I though that perhaps the /dev/dvd link was bad, but it seems fine:

And I know that /dev/cdrom works (they are the same and only optical drive)

I also read about using Mplayer instead of xine, so I went and downloaded and compiled it with no errors that I could see. But once again it doesn't work:

It seems to me that the problem is with dvdread, but I have not been able to find any solutions.

Why did you install xine-lib? It's already on Slackware. It might be causing problems if you've got 2 versions.

do you have correct permissions for user to read /dev/hdc?

User's who are not members of the cdrom group doesn't have read perm on the device pointed by dvd and cdrom. Check that. Do a xine-check too.

It would seem that libdvdread is not working [duh!], so after the above ideas;

1) Check that the libdvd* packages are correct for your system [ie, if you use slackware-current and have downloaded 10.2 packages]
2) Check the output of dmesg [just in case it is a hardware problem]
3) Download and compile the libdvd* source, it is fairly quick and should remove the problems
4) If xine/mplayer still refuse to work, also try Ogle: http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/index.shtml
5) If all else fails, threaten it with su -c "rm -rf /" ;)

I know the permissions are correct, I can access the cdrom for other things (k3b,cdparanoia,and data cds)

The dvd drive worked under ubuntu just last month, and it works under windows currently so I cleaned off the disk, and it works. Thanks for all the help

You know, I had an error that looked like that, or kind of like that, I can't exactly remember, it was for a hard drive tho, but it was a bad ide cable.
