That is a great review of Slackware, it is nice to read a review written by a Slacker. :)

I'm finding little things as I use it more.
Can't use wine for example, always says "Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly."

I can't setup a printer, cups asks for user/password at the very end and won't take my root account, just keeps prompting for user/password again.

Why does KDE now have two file managers, where is the file info view, the one that lists exif data or id3 tags.

I used http://localhost:631 to set-up cups on my Slackware 13.0 box; it is working well over here.

Yea, thats what I use, right after selecting the model it pops up asking for a user/password and won't accept my root account.

Ahh, I figured this one out. I always do my install with root password being blank then set it later, I still had it blank, it doesn't seem to like that, once I set a password it accepted it.

I am a Slackware newbie and installed 13.0 on my Asus EEE 900HA with the goal of setting up a completely encrypted Linux system.

Short answer: It works! Yaaaaaay!

Alien Bob's LVM and CRYPTO and USB install docs were a huge help. So was searching through this forum in getting all the hardware working on the netbook. Thanks to all!

Longer answer: I wrote up a step-by-step guide in setting up encrypted Slack on the 900HA. Hope it helps.

A few days use now and haven't had any serious problems. Slackware so far has been the only recent distro I have used where I have had Python 2.5, 2.6 and 3.0 working on the same installation without breaking anything else, especially package management.

I just can't get used to KDE4. I find it unnecessarily hard to navigate around and find the tools that I need. I've had some graphical corruption in XFCE with windows not lining up with other windows and the menu properly and menu options hidden behind each other. No special drivers or anything, just a standard Intel chipset so not sure what has happened here. Fluxbox is running perfectly and to be honest is staying out of my way allowing me to work a little faster.

K3B has given me some hassle too. Again, not completing discs according to the app but they seem to work okay apart from burning large ISO's that completely fill the disc, then they don't work. Actually, I've had this problem in Brasero too on Ubuntu and Fedora.

I like Slackware, it's easy to understand what is going on underneath and it is well organised, especially from a filing system point of view. If I find that the latest software is what I need, I just compile it from source. I tend to find a lot of glitches with other distros and although most are not serious, the combination of many problems makes me feel I'm using a distro hammered together with cheap nails.

jackd is running great, no more xruns with stock/custom kernel. qjackctl, jamin and jack-aware-apps (smplayer, aqualung etc) all play nice together. Cpu loads are low, although I haven't tried ladspa plugins yet.

With slackware 13, I could get vdpau in smplayer to work for the first time. The results are better than xv.

I use xfce, couldn't get familiar with kde menus (cumbersome). But the 3d desktops effects are nice to have.

I'd wish for easier integration with multimedia/audio apps.

Overall, it's a better experience than previous versions.

i love it 99.9%

the only thing i really did not like was kde-4, i rolled my own qt338 & kde-3.5.10, i know kde-4.x is buggy but i dont blame that on Pat, i blame it on the KDE developers whom should have kept kde-4 under wraps or kept a alpha or beta label on it since i believe it needs lots more work, what good is eye candy if it is on an unstable desktop environment (just my opinion)

after removing kde-4 & qt4 Slackware is still the best Linux distro out there, other than that the only other annoyance is xorg now requires dbus & hal which i would rather live without, but since i need them for xorg i went ahead and installed them, i just hope they stay out of my way...

That's a great guide. I may even try to tackle encryption on my laptops. They're not the Asus EEE but your guide details a lot of things I was finding confusing about using the logical volume manager.

Slackware 13??

So what did you say ? Is the new slackware good ? What is your opinion ?
I m just asking you to know if i have to update my 12.2 version to 13..

Thanks...

brianL 09-15-2009 05:47 PM

I like it. It's OK. But it's up to you whether you update or not. You don't have to.

w1k0 09-15-2009 06:19 PM

Read the entire CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT to form your own opinion. Personally I install each new version of the system and each time I encounter some new problems to resolve.

kc3 09-15-2009 08:26 PM

I'm actually really enjoying it BUT it's probably just because I'm enjoying the new KDE (never liked KDE before this one) and I'm using 64 bit, I'd say, unless you'd really want a native 64 bit system, a system that comes with the new KDE or XFCE than I wouldn't worry about it, the fact that the packages now come in .txz is a nice feature. Really out of the things I listed I'd say only the 64 bit thing would really make it worth the while.

themanwhowas 09-16-2009 12:43 AM

I've been telling people something since the beginning of time and now I'll tell you. Just because there's a new version of something doesn't mean that you need it. Is 12.2 not fulfilling your needs? if so upgrade. If 12.2 is doing a fine job why would you want or need to upgrade to 13?
