If you obtained the ledger sources using git, then you got the sources for the 3.0 in-progress version, not yet released as stable. Most RPMs and other packaged releases of ledger are for the 2.6.x versions, which is the current stable release.
By default, the new 3.0 version outputs its reports to a pager with the output colourized with the ANSI colour codes. Those wierd "ESC[34m", etc, groups are the ANSI colour codes being output through the pager less, which by default doesn't colourize its output.
You can get around this by putting "--pager=most" or "--pager=none" at the end of your ledger command, or you can put the pager options in your .ledgerrc file. Or, if you don't want colour output, put "--no-color" at the end of your command or in .ledgerrc.
