Question Learning Linux (Slackware)

Hello there slackers,

I will make it short bare with me, please.

I intend to learn Linux, i know the basic commands and i am a power user who came from windows and also learning C on a virtual machine ( using ubuntu) provided by the intro course ( www.cs50.net ) and through my reading in this forum/blogs most of the people said if you want to learn Linux go for slackware, so....

Question One: is it possible to install it on this laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545) by that i mean working sound/wireless/touchpad?

Question Two: what about the learning curve?easy?hard?

Question Three: do you recommend a book?

Excuse my poor grammar , Thanks in advance.

I'm not much of an OS guru and I think Slackware is the easiest. I made this noob tutorial, don't know how useful it is:

IMHO, the SlackBasics book (http://www.slackbasics.org/) is the best one to read right after the Slack Book.

There's not really a difference besides the updated packages.

As for question #1, I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1545 myself! With sound (HDA-Intel), Wireless (Broadcom BCM4315 with hybrid sta wireless driver) and Touchpad (already supported from kernel). Honestly, it's *very* easy to make them work, I had no problem at all.

Question #2: Well, I'm a Slackware user since February this year - I'm still a newbie, but I get my work arounds pretty easy. The Philosophy "because it works" has it's meaning. I had the system up and going as I like on the first day.

Now, Question #3, always the Slackbook and Alien's Slackbook.

There is not much Slackware documentation and of what there is, little is up to date. That sounds bad but it's not. It's not bad because Slackware is as close as practicable to standard Linux with standard utilities, only fixed for sanity and reliability, not enhanced with distro-specific "goodies". The result is there's little in Slackware which is Slackware-specific so the standard documentation applies; there's no need for extensive Slackware-specific documentation.

The Slackware distribution itself includes a lot of documentation and the as-distributed configuration files include many examples and usage comments.

Many Slackware users are community minded so there's a wealth of shared experience online. Here's a few links including links to links

Q1. Yes, The Inspiron install will require some tweaking for the wireless. Do a search here on LQ as I know the subject has been covered many times.

Q2. That depends on you!

Q3. Look at my sig.
