The latest intel driver works only with kms. You have to put modeset=1 for i915 options. Just create a file named i915 in /etc/modprobe.d with "options i915 modeset=1" in it.

I did that but no luck at this moment.

I upgraded to the latest Slack additions to the massive upgrade, too.

I downgraded to a previous version of the intel driver, and it seems to be working. Exiting KDE, however, gives me blank screen without proper CLI screen. I can ctrl+alt+del to reboot my machine.

As of pppd and mkinitrd, only previous versions are working.

Hm, it works for me on my 945gm. Does your video switch to kms upon loading the i915 module on boot? And mkinitrd works for me too. May be you have some broken packages in your system.

Well, now the graphics is OK with your suggested modesetting and the latest current intel driver. Thanks :)
I don't know why it didn't start at 1st attempt, but now it is ok.
No Xorg.conf file is involved now.

At some free time I'll investigate my pppd and mkinitrd issues.
