laptop mouse and "eraser" problems


for some reason...when i plug in my usb mouse into the back of my slakptop (on boot up.. it doesnt work in x...the "eraser" does..but not my usb mouse. Its hella confusing because somtimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Also is there a way to keep linux from crashing my system when i unplug the mouse out of the usb port and plug it back in?

hmmmm...now i tried taking out my network cable
(and rebooted) and for some reason, the usb mouse works. Any ides on how to fix this? OH i have my XF86Config file configured correct.
