Laptop hard disk constant activity

Hiya (again, sorry),
When i say "activity" I dont mean that the hard disk is always spinning. It's more like there's 1-second high-pitched noise that the HD might be doing something, then nothing, then 30-40 seconds later it happens again (sometimes longer than 40 seconds). I normally have my laptop plugged into the mains when it's on.

I had this problem with ubuntu (same laptop, first partition). I vaguely remember I had to add a line in some config file that included the command HDPARM, which stopped the noise. Sorry i can't be more specific.

Has anyone come across this with slack? I'm getting paranoid that it's killing my HD :o If so are there any remedies?

Many thanks in advance,
mute

There's a thread here from a while ago that may be of interest.
