Update--kppp- bombs out with error 4
 

Just installed Slackware 9.1 yesterday afternoon. Install went good, but while booting it has the following-- fatal: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.8.1/modules/dep no such file or directory.
lookiing in the lib/modules show lib/modules/2.4.22
Not knowing much about these error messages, I suspect this could be related to being unable to get the kppp dialer going. It does connect but bombs out with an error 4. (the kernel does not support PPP)
When I do a uname -a I get darkstar 2.6.8.1 and sure enough there is no /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-
I do remember choosing the default kernel bare.i when installing. Could this be the major problem. Should I reinstall with another kernel choice.
Now, I have Vector, Buffalo, Suse, Mandrake and Slackware on two drives. The only thing revelant about this is, Suse and Mandrake has the identical error message about the 2.6.8.1 and also can not get, on the internet or even find the dialer.
Where can I look to fix this. I have googled and read the forum back to page 12 and also searched the forum. Saw some references to it but not enough for me.....

I didn't really know how to do this except put it here....Anyway, I kept hammering away at the problem, Which was not being able to get on internet and having all those error message's.....
I finally found the >settings>control center > System Administration > kernel and I saw the top choice was vmlinuz the next one was 2.4.22 -- chose that, rebooted. Error messages went away and kppp did its thing...looks faily good so far. I see some choices of window managers but not my favorite ICEwm. KDE is ok though.

Never used Slack but it sounds like the kernel does not include ppp support. No promises though. man pppd and scroll down to the exit status. In case you wonder where I got the info from.

Yes, that's where I found the 'error 4', in the man pppd. If no one has any ideas, I will just reinstall with a different kernel choice. I think there were several choices at first part of install. I thought,however, it would be more interesting to try to fix it, but I definately need more understanding and knowledge.
I am using a test machine with just linux. It's an old 500mhz with 256 mb ram. I think about 1999. Could be part of the problem.

If you have the kernel sources you may can recompile the kernel. ppp is what is used for the modem to maintain the connection from one computer to another. Even some broadband connections use it.

All I have is the 2 cd's that came with 9.1 -- I looked in rc.d/rc.modules and ppp is commented out. So maybe I didn't do the configuration properly during install. Also, I am trying to understand why the system is looking for 2.6.8.1, that is not in the /lib/modules and should be looking for lib/modules/2.4.22 ,which is in there!!

I use 10.0(2.4.26) and also chose 'bare.i' image, but no problem (now) with kppp.

I see that Slackware 10 has the 2.2.26 kernel. 9.1 has the 2.2.22---- however, when I enter uname -a , I get :
Linux darkstar 2.6.8.1 ---What do you get when you do uname -a ??? is this comparing apples and oranges?
