konsole error in KDE 3.2
 

Everytime I open the console (after I installed KDE 3.2) I get this error message:

Font `-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-iso10646-1' not found.
Check README.linux.console for help.


I can't find the README file either:scratch: any ideas?

Well I guess it depends how deep you want to dig to sort out the problem.
The first thing I would try is changing the font, open the console, settings/font/custom and choose something else - see if another font is to your liking. My complete guess on why it occurred is that the font that is no longer available is set in your home/.kde somewhere from your previous kde installation. If you are prepared to reset ALL your kde preferences, you could rename .kde to .kde.old or something. Then you would start afresh setting up kde with the choices your new kde installation offers. If you get into difficulties you can always go back by restoring your original .kde dir. This is overkill however if everything else is ok and you can find a suitable alternative font for the console....phew!

we'll likely stick with qt-3.2.2. That version is working fine here.
If you have a need for the new features in Qt 3.3, feel free to use it.
Other than the Konsole problem, it works fine with KDE 3.2.0."

If anybody knows a fix I would be grateful to know

I had this problem on a few machines and just changed the font to something else, AND SAVED IT on the console.
On my most recent PC the problem popped up as I upgraded towards "current" and then the problem went away, so I suspect it is fixed in the full "current" set.

I've been getting this error too (KDE 3.2.1).
My fix was to go (in konsole):
Settings|Font|Normal.
And then:
Settings|Save as Default.

Never any any more problems ;).

the problem can reoccur if, in the console you go to settings->font->linux

i have also seen some problems wiht the fonts in firefox, still trying ot find a fix...

More or less same thing here.

I did not get the error message at startup, but it popped up when I wanted to change the font to Linux. Additionally, when I chose a custom font, only a few fonts were shown. Either unreadable, or ugly, or un-proportionally spaced (a real stress to the eyes).

README.konsole.linux did not provide any help.

After I did
Settings | Fonts | Normal section.<<< so this solves the problem!
I suddenly could change to the Linux font, and also found a acceptable, sizable font in the Custom

Another workaround for this problem is to set the console fonts through the Slackware pkgtool app.........................as root, type 'pkgtool' into a konsole, highlight the "Setup" option and hit Enter..................from there scroll down until you see the option "setconsolefont", and select it by highlighting then hitting the spacebar, then hit Enter. When asked if you would like to try out some custom screen fonts, choose Yes........................Now scroll down until you come to "default8x16.psfu.gz", highlight it and hit Okay, The next screen will ask if you like what you see. Say Yes........

After that, you should be able to choose Settings -> Font -> Linux without getting any error messages.......... :)

I tried your fix 'thegeekster' but it it did not work for me.
I still get the the same error message when I select the the Linux font.
Changing to a different font does get rid of the error message, but I would still like this to work as I miss the Linux colours when doing directory listings in a Konsole window.

If you've selected the console font through 'pkgtool', then try rebooting the computer and see if that will make the difference..................It's been a while when I did this and I don't remember if I had to reboot or not......... :)

Well, I have rebooted the computer as well as shutdown and restarted the Konsole window, with no change.
At this time I am running KDE 3.2.1 and QT3.3.1 with Xfree 4.4.0 on top of 2.4.25 kernel. Perhaps a a more current configuration will help.
