konqueror, firefox hang on http://doc.trolltech.com/4.3/index.html

I was trying to access the Qt documentation, and Konqueror kept hanging. Not on all the pages; just certain ones, like the home page for Qt 4.3, Qt 4.2, ... The page eventually loads, but it takes a long time (like 5 minutes? haven't timed it exactly). I tried it in Firefox, and I got the same result. However, I tried it in IE & Firefox on Windows, and there was no problem. Also, Safari on a mac doesn't have the problem.

Does anyone else have this problem on a SW 12 box? Does anyone have an idea of how to fix it?

Just tried it and everything loads instantly there ... even tho my connection isn't the best at the moment. Can you specify exactly which pages, I've tried many, and they all load instantly. (this is with FF)

Tux-Slack 09-27-2007 05:23 AM

Use Qt Assistant instead, faster loading(no lag from the internet)

duryodhan 09-27-2007 07:08 AM

yeah, but also many of the qt4 packages don't come with the documentation(to keep the size of the lib small I guess). If thats the case you could try wgetting the whole damn thing from trolltech and keeping a backup at your comp.

Turn off JavaScript

Some versions of Konqueror have problems with the JavaScript used for the recent Qt documentation on doc.trolltech.com. You can turn off JavaScript on a per-site basis by doing the following:

Selecting the "Configure Konqueror" item in the "Settings" menu and enter the "Java & JavaScript" section of the configuration dialog.

Go into the "JavaScript" tab and click "New..." to add a new domain.

Enter "doc.trolltech.com" as the domain and select "Reject" as the policy.

Click "OK" to accept the new configuration. Hopefully, doc.trolltech.com should be a lot more responsive.

FWIW about your orig. prob.: http://doc.trolltech.com/4.3/index.html loaded almost instantly on Konq. 3.5.3 in MEPIS 6.0.

H_TeXMeX_H 09-27-2007 09:33 AM

Oh, about javascript, I have noscript extension installed, so javascript was off when viewing that site ... maybe that made a difference.

tuubaaku 09-27-2007 12:55 PM

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like javascript was the problem - when I turned it off, the page loaded.

dboddie 09-28-2007 05:28 AM

A workaround

Since I can't ask everyone to turn off JavaScript when visiting doc.trolltech.com, I temporarily disabled the script that runs on the documentation pages. When the author of the script returns from vacation, I'll ask him to see if he can fix it.

Welcome to LQ, David (dboddie at trolltech dot com & @ LQ :)).

That's very thoughtful, thank you.

BTW, I'm curious:
  • How did you find out about this thread?
  • These seem to your 1st 2 LQ posts, did you create your account just to help w/ this problem?

H_TeXMeX_H 09-28-2007 07:59 AM

go here:

http://www.google.com/linux

and search:

it's the first hit out of 3 total

I'm betting that's the best way to find this thread.

Yes, it seemed like someone should say what was causing the problem. :)

I can't promise I'll be able to spend a lot of time reading LQ, but I'll try and use my account now that I have one.

thanks a lot for your help. :)

Good, you may be very helpful w/ deep QT questions.

(For those who didn't know, KDE uses QT; & Trolltech writes QT.)

duryodhan 09-30-2007 11:37 PM

and there are going to be many soon , KDE 4 is coming up !

You might even have people using Windows posting here about KDE4 on win problems ... (although I hope they will be minimal, as QT4 rocks ,I have been using it for quite a few apps )
