Kernel upgrading and nvidia drivers

I installed Slackware to my computer recently. The kernel is 2.4.xx (default). I need to upgrade it to get sound to work. So could you ppl post some links to howtos? I have once done it but forgot how to do it again. When I did it and tried to install nvidia drivers, I had some kind of problem, can't remember what. Maybe it was something about kernel headers or something. I installed the drivers when I had kernel 2.4.xx, it didn't have any problems.

Maybe I'm just being a pessimist, but I doubt you will find your answer with such a brief description of your problem. Specifically:

Quote:

If you can't remember the problem, how can anyone hope to solve it?

You mention kernel headers. You should make sure that you DID NOT upgrade the kernel headers. This is a surefire method for breaking things.

TIP: I wassume that your problem occurs when running the NVidia installer (I hate to assume, but I am forced to with the amount of information given). So why don't you try running the installer again? If it doesn't work, it will tell you the name of the log file. That log file will probably tell you what the problem is. Try posting the last few lines of it.

Also, you may find it helpful to post:

-what kernel you upgraded to
-method of kernel upgrade (Slackware packages or manual)
-version of NVidia driver you are attempting to install

Back then it was kernel 2.6.10 I upgraded to. I need to upgrade my kernel first to know what the problem exactly is. So now I need (a) guide(s) to upgrade the kernel, after that I will come back to tell the what the problem is.

A nice way to search a howto:
http://www.google.com.ar/search?hl=e...BAsqueda&meta=

If you want to use a precompiled kernel:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/answers/487
WARNING: Skip the step explained there that tells you to install the 2.6 kernel headers.

If you want to compile it yourself: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=127095

Both ways in one page:
http://www.slackersbible.org/node/42

By the way, the nvidia drivers do work with 2.4 kernels.
And I think you should at least try to give some answer to shilo who was trying to help you, not just "I need this". I would suggest you, from my own experience, that you start reading and writting down the errors, searching the web, you'll learn a lot. And of course, be helpfull to the one that's trying to help you solve something.

There is one annoying point with the Nvidia driver.

The Nvidia driver installer normally deletes the previously-used driver module. To avoid that behavior you have to specify the -K option when running the installer. -K stands for --kernel-module-only and installs a kernel module only, and doesn't uninstall the existing driver. This is intended to be used to install kernel modules for additional kernels (in cases where you might boot between several different kernels). To use this option, you must already have a driver installed, and the version of the installed driver must match the version of this kernel module. That means all kernels must use the same driver version.

When you are asked during installation of the Nvidia driver if you want to download a precompiled driver module, answer no to compile your own one.

That's all I can remember. Good luck =).

Lars
