kernel problem with Slackware 9 install
 

I decided to do a clean install of slackware 9 instead of upgrade from 8. So I downloaded the slackware 9 iso did a clean install using default kernel.
Everything went fine until i exited setup and rebooted, i had problems loading my network card module natsemi.o so i used insmod and it said : this module is for kernel 2.4.20 , you are using 2.4.19.

uname -a shows that i have 2.4.19 kernel installed

So i reinstalled again and checked during install what kernel was selected and it said 2.4.20 but after reboot it said i had 2.4.19 kernel installed.

I was just wondering if this was a known error or something i havent set correctly?

i had a look in /boot and i have vmlinuz-ide-2.4.20 listed so im really confused now heh

Slackware 9.0 uses 2.4.20. Did you format your drive before installing 9.0?

yes i repartitioned and reformatted

thats why i cant understand why it says i have 2.4.19 kernel :(

I agree...something is very wrong here. I haven't been able to come up with any ideas thus far...sorry, but I am clueless.

I am also having problems.

After cleaning off my 8.0 partitions I went to install slackware 9.0.

Install went smooth etc, did a full install (except for gnome)

As usual I went and got the kernel source and latest patch from kernel.org (2.4.20 with the pre4 patch so my agp/soundcard works right, I have a fairly new mobo)

After patching, then configuring, make dep, make install,make modules, make modules_install etc I rebooted.

Then I got loads of errors about dependencys and /lib/modules/2.4.20/modules.dep
and I cant load the modules I need (ppp, etc)

I do a uname -a and see that its showing im using 2.4.20 instead of 2.4.20-pre4.
I even did a make bzImage in the kernel directory, and update lilo myself, move System.Map to / and /boot etc, nothing working.

Even if I try to use a 2.2.x or 2.5.x (just for testing) it will still say 2.4.20.

It will run fine if I use the kernel that slack came with it, but what would be the point if my sound doesn't work that good or my agp was crap and would freeze while trying to play 3d games?

AMD XP 2100 with 512 megsof DDR ram agp 8x MSI limited edition mobo cmedia sound via chipset etc etc.

Any help would be appriciated.

Did you run lilo to update to your new kernel?

Are you sure, you downloaded the official ISO? It exists some unofficial ISOs.

I have it working now.
I reinstalled slackware 9.0 and this time and didn't install a kernel at all or any the kernel modules package, only the include files or whatever.
Then I booted up with another mini linux distro and removed a few packages etc then I recompiled my kernel and rebooted, it worked fine.
Even the new hot plugging stuff automatically loaded all the modules I needed.

Working fine.
