Kernel - extra crispy or original recipe

I have been using Linux as a general use for a while and used... *cough... ubuntu... *cough....

I really didn't get a chance to learn anything because (Ubuntu) does nearly everything for you... hence why I turned to slackware the granddaddy of Linux distros (or at least thats what I gather from researching distros)

Note: I learned more about linux (w/ slackware) in 1 week then I did with Ubuntu in about 4 months...
I'm not bashing it. I think it's great just unhelpful for someone that wants to get down and dirty with the OS right from the start.

so...
I have pretty much mastered reinstalls now.
I can get my video and network(wired) set up perfectly without the use of the readme files I have now memorized...

The problem is when I try install the mac80211 module.
I perform every operation the readme file indicates and it bakes the kernel and I get kernel panics every time...

I have read ALOT of texts, readme, and various forum posts, but I think I am missing something somewhere.

Note: The Intel 4569AGN tells you to install the mac80211 module before installing the driver itself. I'm sure most of you are aware of that already...

when running /sbin/lilo I get the following message as well
Quote:
warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
when booting after the kernel recompile and attempted mac80211 install I get this:
Quote:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

Did you enable your filesystem as built-in to the kernel ? Did you use 'make menuconfig' when building the kernel ?

Put the line:

lba32

in your /etc/lilo.conf and run 'lilo' again.

IIRC you get an error similar to that VFS if you don't compile in the virtual filesystem support. When the system boots you need that support whether or not you plan to use a vfs yourself. I don't recall if that is the exact message but I seem to remember something like it happening to me once.

I got the very same message the first time that I tried to compile my own kernel but making an initrd solved the problem. Instructions are given in /boot if you have not done this.

I reference you to this thread for the ieee80211. You could be mistaking the ieee80211softmac.ko as the module to use. Some of the cards require this module.

As for the kernel panic, just create a initrd via the '/boot/README.initrd' then modify the '/etc/lilo.conf' file to include the initrd in the proper stanza. Then you will need to do a 'lilo' to update.
