Kernel Cross-Compile pentium->i486

Hi,

I have a fairly old piece of hardware (CPU: 486DX100, 16 MB RAM, 240 MB HD), which I intend to use as an access point to act as a wireless router for my adsl connection, and maybe turn it into a file and print server for my home.

I have installed Slack 9.0 in it. I chose this version basically for simplicity since this is the same that I have in my laptop. RP-PPPoE works fine and I'm able to connect the 486DX to the internet.

The issue is that I need to recompile the kernel but I do not have enough space in the 486DX100 machine to uncompress and recompile. So I want to use my pentium-MMX laptop to cross-compile the kernel for the 486DX machine.

I tried to just specify the processor architecture in menuconfig to i486, but when I try to boot the new kernel in the 486DX machine, I get the following message:

"The kernel was compiled for pentium+ machines", or something like that.

Any insight (or link to any documentation) on how to do that? The kernel version that I'm trying to cross-compile is 2.4.25.

Thanks!

It seems my question is too specific, right? Or is this the wrong forum to ask? Or is open source family getting dumber?
