Kernel compiling lilo gone?

Yes i have returned.. why? because u guys always help :>

I followed the instructions in this forum for compiling kernel. I belive they worked flawlessly except now on my laptop lilo.conf is missing?! Ok so i rebuild the file. it boots except not to the lilo.conf file i made!... Lilo is installed on the MBR.. liloconfig wont work. What do i do to fix this? Its not even booting to the new kernel when i run
uname -a
i get ver 2.4.20 i just compiled 2.4.21

k thanks!

Try

less /etc/lilo.conf

and post it's contents.

If it's gone, look at man lilo.conf
and build a new one. I doubt that
compiling a kernel would kill it, though.

Cheers,
Tink

You mean that the lilo.conf file in the etc directory is the one you want? If you're sure it's the way you want it (keep that boot floppy handy :-), then you can just run the command

lilo

and it will load that configuration (whatever's in /etc/lilo.conf) into lilo. The only other stumbling block I can think of offhand is that you can have lilo in both the MBR and the root of your Linux install, but you will only boot from one of them. If you accidentally load the configuration into one, but you are booting from the other, your configuration won't have any effect.

A side point: You get a "No manual entry for lilo.conf" message? There should be an entry for it.

Sorry mate you must have done something
other than just compile a kernel ... or are you
trying to do the whole thing as non-root user?

When you say that lilo does nothing, do you mean that there is no apparent result? Is there no message at all? Is there an error message (there should be at least an error message)? If there is a message, what does it say? You should either get an error message or a message for each menu item you are trying to add that says something like "Added Linux."
