in /usr/scr/ the only folder is rpm
so aussie said downlod
you need to download and untar a kernel
should i just go download a kernel and use tar...
on it and then the /usr/src/linux/Makefile will show up???

bunzip2 -d patch-2.4.20.bz2

This should work. It is not a tar file. It was just bunziped.

When I try to run make, it says that the command cannot be found. Anyone have any clue as to why it would say this?

Nevermind. It seems that package tool stops working on the D directory at the gcc for java. So, it skips important stuff like make and perl. I'm not sure why it did that, but I fixed it. Thanks for the help anyway.

ok i kno this refers to slackware
:qoute:
If you are using 8.1 or later, open /usr/src/linux/Makefile in a text editor, scroll to line 74 and
uncomment the the line #export INSTALL_PATH=/boot.
For 8.0 you must leave this line commented.
:qoute:
but im running RH 7.2, do i comment or uncomment

You uncomment when your distro keeps the kernel in /boot (most do), slackware used to keep the kernel in / prior to 8.1.

I just installed Slackware 9.0 and I am impressed how easy it is. Most of my boxes run SuSE 8.2, and I really like YaST, but I was unable to get this latest onto my P120/40MB Laptop, so I had to look for soemthing else. Slackware was the winner, because it is the only distro I could find that is easy to install on such old hardware (with diskette and PCMCIA Ethernet, but no CD-ROM). It is possible with others, but in most cases it is a lot of work, and there are normally no clear instructions how to do it in a scenario like mine.
So thanks and compliments to the makers of this nice distro!

However, I have now a little problem compiling my kernel.
When I say
make menuconfig
I get
/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries
>>
>> You must have Ncurses installed in order
>> to use 'make menuconfig'

Now, I do have Ncurses installed, and I even tried ldconfig to make the libraries visible. But ncurses is complex and I may have missed some option or path...
And: On my SuSE boxes there are normally two ncurses packages, ncurses and ncurses-devel. To use make menuconfig the latter has to be installed there. But I can't find a devel package in the slackware distribution...

Any help much appreciated!

Sincerely
Alex
