Kernel Compiling general question

Following Daone's guide I recently attempted to move my slack 9.1 system over to the 2.6.3 kernel. It worked fine, except my usb devices (most importanly, my mouse..) don't work.

I know I said yes to USB HID in menuconfig, and I know I said yes to the thing above it (something like enable USB in general), but it gets nary a flicker when I boot into slack.

First: Any clue what's wrong with my particular situation?

Second (and probably more importantly): When should I compile something as a module and when should I compile something into the kernel? I know I put USB HID into the kernel, not as a module. Is this where I went wrong?

Thanks in advance,
DeadlyMuffin

No. lsusb does nothing.

The light on the optical mouse doesn't even turn on, and it doesn't mention usb once during the bootup. With the old kernel it mentioned it a lot, especially when it found my printer.

I'm convinced it's not working because it's not in the kernel right, I need to know what I can do differently when I try it again.
