Kernel compile question?

In the Compiling a kernel for newbies sticky above, What does the line " Note: Replace /dev/hda1 with the correct location of your root partition. " refer to?
Isnt /dev/hda1 the root partition?
Thanks

hda1 is only the root partition if you chose it to be so. it could be any partition, hdg8 of you wanted... incase you're confused about the terminology, the root partition is the one that contains the / files, all the base directories etc...

it depends on where you installed Slackware to. for example my root partition is /dev/hda2 (i have windows on /dev/hda1) and i also have another linux disto installed with a root of /dev/hda4.

well if root is on its own partition.........

it could be /dev/hda4 or if you have 2 drives installed it could be
/dev/hdb6 , /dev/hdb9

So you really dont have to change /dev/hda1 to anything if doing a kernel upgrade if youve got just one partition or hard drive?

As long as /dev/hda1 is the root partition, no you don't have to change anything. (assuming you have an ide hard drive ).

Thanks,
Would that affect the old Kernel from booting if I leave it hda1?
In case the new kernel does not boot,
I would like to be able to boot the old one.
