Maybe it's the infamous modules.conf/modprobe.conf thing.
with modutils, there should be a script that takes your modules.conf and updates it to modprobe.conf.
Try that?

I set /usr/src/linux to point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.1 but that didnt do anything. As a matter of fact it's still set like that and im running 2.4.22 right now.
You have it in the wrong order, at least from what I've read how to install. Here's what you should do:

make *config
make clean
make
make modules
make modules_install
make install (Or make bzImage)

So, basically, you're making the kernel after you configured the settings for preparation, but never prepared the kernel with make. So do make bzImage or make install last, and it should work.

I dont think it is loading modules correctly. I just downloaded the 2.6.2rc3 patch and recompiled with a bunch of modules and when i boot into 2.6 I get the same two modules loading, inlcuding agpgart which I build into the kernel not as a module. Maybe it is still loading my modules from 2.4.22? What can I do? I have checked that I have all of the requirments for 2.6. rebuilt, checked my links, etc etc.
Check your /etc/modules.conf or whatever you use to load your modules. All I have in there is for it to load apm, maybe one other thing, I don't recall, I'm on my XP machine right now. I would comment out all the lines except what you need in your modules file, just in case you decide to change back to older settings later on, then you'll know what you had.

<< Maybe it's the infamous modules.conf/modprobe.conf thing >>

Nope, there is only one thing in my modules.conf and I copied it over to modprobe.conf.

<< You have it in the wrong order .... >>

I will give this a try as soon as I get home and reply back.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Well I compiled it in the order you specified. Same result. Only two modules loading. I've gotta be missing something. what is 'make modules_install' supposed to do? Where is it supposed to install them and how is the kernel supposed to know to load them?

Update: I have verified that it is a module loading problem by compiling the forcedeth driver into the kernel. I now can get network connectivity in 2.6. Still no mouse, however.
