kernel compile message

Quote:

tools/build -b bbootsect bsetup compressed/bvmlinux.out CURRENT > bzImage
Root device is (3, 3)
Boot sector is 512 bytes
System is 1246 kB
warning: kernel is to big for standalone boot from floppy
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot/'
then it exits back to command prompt

I get this message about 25 mins after i do "make bzImage" and i had configured a fairly large kernel. Does anyone know what it means?

I'm on a 500mhz celeron, so it seems like the compile is to fast, does anyone know how to fix this error?

Your question was answered here...

Starting a different thread asking the same question is against the forum rules.

it doesnt look like that to me.

that post was about my sound not the error mesage im geting during compilation. (although it did mention that there was some sort of error during compilation)

my question stands.

Well, these posts of yours sure looks like that to me and I'm sure to the moderators.

Your question undeniably stands, I'm just saying that it might be better if you continue it on that particular thread since it has evolved into your concern of this kernel size warning question.

And did you even read what I've written there?

ok, good point,
heres another question.

how large is a standard kernel?

and how large is a really big kernel? (but not so big that it looses functionality)

Most standard kernel's will be close to about a meg in size. It all really depends on what kind of support your compiling into them, so there really is no definitive answer.
