kernel changing and reboot

I've always thought that in order to change to a new kernel that's on your pc that you had to reboot. Is that true?

The reason I ask is that I keep my Slack server running 24/7 and have a bunch of kernels on my pc that I compiled myself. To switch to another kernel, do I have to stop my server and reboot?
