Kernel 2.6.16 Questions

Hi, I just upgraded my laptop to the 2.6.16 kernel. Looking around various repositories for packages, I see that most only have things like alsa-drivers and kernel-modules for kernels up to 2.6.15.

When do these packages generally get released? I am not all that familiar with kernels being released etc. So I am still running my system with 2.6.13 kernel modules from the /testing directory and I just compiled the alsa driver from the source code, so its not really a pressing issue. Just generally wondering.

Also, is it safe to remove my 2.6.13 kernel source? I should assume so since I am using 2.6.16 now.

As long as your sound works, don't worry. If sound does not work, you must compile your soundcard in your kernel.

And as long as everything works, you can delete, but to test, rename the files first, just in case you DO need them, easy to restore. If all goes well, delete if you wish

Ah ok, thank you.

I always keep my sound as modules. Every time I try to do it built in it never seems to work for me, on my desktop or laptop. Ah well, its not like a big deal, I only do kernel compiles once every so often, and I just keep the necessary files around.

I'll do the renaming thing, thanks cwwilson

BTW, alsa drivers (you need alsa lib, alsa oss, alsa utils) are not necessary to have with 2.6 kernel, but if you prefer this building method, it's up to you.
