Kernal 2.6.12.3 Fstab/nvidia Problem

My problem lies in 3 major factors.
1. I dont know much about linux
2. I compiled the 2.6.12.3 kernal, But I really havent the vaguest idea of what I was doing.
3. I have a newer computer useing SATA, but was able to get the kernal going on a Ramdisk.

The issues I have right now are as follows.
1. I am unable to recognize my Cdrom, External usb dvd burner, or 2 of my drives that are the nt fileformat. (I ASSUME IT IS A FSTAB PROBLEM)
2. I had my pci express nvidia card which i got working on the 2.4 distro.

I use kde version 3.4.2 and when i try to use any of my drives it says "mount point does not exist.". The only dirve that works is my Main drive that I created a ramdisk for. I think It is fstab problem because I downloaded slax just for the hell of it and booted that up and all my gear worked so I copied the fstab and edited it a bit but still no dice. As for my video card when i try to reload the drivers it says UNABLE TO LOAD NVIDIA.KO I found some good documentation on some probabble fixes like uname after the nvidia.pkg1, But when I got the driver installed it could not find any screens. Any help appreciated.
Here is my fstab.
/dev/hdd1 /mnt/hdd1 ntfs auto,users,suid,dev,exec 0 0

Could you post the contents of your .config file for your kernel?

Seems that you may be missing a few features.

While I don't run a 2.6.12.3 kernel, I have no problems with my nVidia drivers, reading NTFS partitions, or USB Drives with my 2.6.10 kernel

You need to make sure that you have ntfs turned on in the /DOS/FAT/NT section. (Also check that you have your linux filesystem selected ( Y ) so that the kernel can "see" the filesystem on boot.

As for nvidia, did you edit your Xorg.conf as recommended in the readme located at /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/ ? The instructions should have been displayed when you installed the driver ( module).

Contents of readme:
If you have a working X config file for a different driver (such as the "nv"
or "vesa" driver), then simply edit the file as follows.

Remove the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")
(or Driver "fbdev")

and replace it with the line:

Driver "nvidia"

Remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLCore"

In the "Module" section of the file, add the line (if it does not already exist):
Load "glx"

Alternately,
you could verify that your x session will run by using the VESA driver...

If it says mount point does not exist it means the real folder (eg /mnt/hdd1) doesnt exist
So for your fstab I would check that both /mnt/hdd1 and /mnt/sda3 exist and if not su to root and mkdir them
Then you can try mount /mnt/hdd1

incidently: for the nvidia driver to work you must install it AFTER compiling the kernel, so if you just compiled the kernel, reinstall nvidia

Thanks for posting your .config file.
I know you said you are new to linux, but why did you choose to compile your kernel for a 486 machine if you have a 3Ghz P4 with Hyperthreading?

It seems that you have chosen to use modules for the DOS/FAT/NT filesystems, did you remember to modprobe them in, or did you edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules?

did you check to see if you have the mount points listed in your fstab in your /mnt directory?
If they are missing you will not be able to mount.

you might try something like #mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/hd to see if you can mount your ntfs, /mnt/hd is created by default as a mount point.

If I recall, there is a difference in the 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels for handling scsi naming... I haven't used 2.4 for some time now, but all my usb devices follow the sdx# naming convention with x being the next available letter and # being the partition I want to access. In other words, I don't think /dev/sr0 is the correct name for your usb cdrom in a 2.6.x kernel. Try reboting with the usb cd unplugged, letting the system come to a prompt, then logging in as root, plugging in the cd and looking a dmesg to see if hotplug saw the device and assigned a device name to use.

Now could any of these probems be because of my initrd?? And do I have to have one w/ my sata. Also I copied my fstab from the time I booted Up Slax. I booted Slax to see if all my hardware would be recognized ( which it was ). So Im sure the fstab is wrong. also with the nvidia I get that unable to load nvidia.ko, and in my /mnt dir I have /cdrom, /hd, /floppy, I dont have a floppy drive though.

You can't use the dynamicly made fstab from Slax in your staticly installed version of Slackware.
On default install of Slack, the Directory of /mnt/hd /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/floppy are created.

You need to boot your system, and log in as root, then
#mkdir /mnt/hddd1
#mkdir /mnt/sda3

At that point your mount points will be created for your ntfs partitions, but your mount point for your USB CDROM WILL NOT.

You can then do one of the following to check and see if your ntfs partions are available,

#mount /dev/hdd1 /mnt/hdd1
#mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3

Then you should have access - OR

if you then issue the command
#telinit 6

your system will shutdown and reboot,
and fstab will automount both because of the auto setting

The line in your fstab that reads:
/dev/sd0 /mnt/sd0_cdrom iso9660 noauto, users,exec 0 0
is for your USB DRIVE and is WRONG.

Plug in your USB CDROM and
$dmesg to see if the USB subsystem finds your drive.
It should say something that tells you about scsi emulation for USB Mass Storage
It will tell you the hardware vendor and then tell you where it has attached the device to your system.
With my system, it attaches usbdrives, keys, etc. to the next available drive letter.
If you see sdb listed then this is the proper mount command for your USB CDROM.
You will have to edit your fstab again for this device, mkdir the mount point of your choice in /mnt and edit fstab to match both the /dev and /mnt instead of

DYE I Appreciate all your help. Some things I dont understand Is why do I have to mkdir those mount points? And why is it saying this http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shit4yu.png .... http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shit21xc.png . Should I have complied those files systems as modules.
