KDEConnect not working anymore in Slackware 14.2

Dear all,

one of the very few reasons, why I chose Android over iOS for my mobile phone is KDEConnect and the fact that there is no appropriate equivalent available for Apple devices. Unfortunately, I cannot get KDEConnect working properly on my main system running Slackware 14.2 64-bit augmented with stuff from AlienBOB and SlackBuilds.org.

What happens, and what I did so far:
  • All devices running KDEConnect are on the same subnet (double-checked)
  • My computer is connected to my router/internet gateway via LAN cable
  • My two Android phones are connected to the router/internet gateway
  • My two Android phones "see" each other almost immediately
  • My main computer, however, is not seen by any of the phones
  • My main computer doesn't see the phones in the network, either
  • *BUT* the phones can ping the computer and vice versa

Of course I did some web research, before posting here, and found this:
  • Check the firewall setup
  • open ports 1416 through 1464 (on the computer, not the router/gateway, if I got it right).

But:
  • Stock Slackware 14.2 has no firewall, right?
  • Plus, it wasn't necessary/had been done before, because until some weeks ago KDEConnect worked just fine on my main system.

In another thread it was stated that recent version of KDEConnect would only work with Plasma 5, now. Is this true? Can anyone confirm this, or provide a link to "official" documentation containing this information?
To be honest, I'd be quite surprised, if this were true. Why would it make sense to drop support for KDE 4, but continuing to support ancient Android 4.4.2 (which is what my old phone running on).

I am looking forward to any comments and suggestions, how to track this problem down, thanks in advance, everone!

Assuming you are indtalling the latest version from the Play store, you could try installing and older version of KDEconnect from F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/packages/org.kde.kdeconnect_tp/. One of those should still work with the KDE4 version.

High bosth, (EDIT: That should have been "both", of course, but I don't correct it, in order not to render Richard Cranium's post point(er)less )

first of all: Sorry for the way too much delayed response to your tip.
I was finally able to verify that more recent versions of kdeconnect don't play with older versions of KDE, unfortunately.
Which is a pity. I could understand, if not the full functionality was able, but I haven't found a human-readable explanation, why the connection is refused.

On my laptop running Slackware64-current and Eric's Plasma 5 kdeconnect is incredibly nice, and one reason, why I am using an Android smartphone, although generally I prefer iOS. This little app is of really great value for me.

So I am hoping, that all the things Pat is waiting for regarding the next major stable release will come together nicely any time soon, so that I can use kdeconnect on my desktop, again, too. Of course, I am not urging anyone for a premature release.

Nice way to point me to a funny typo, thanks.
And BTW: Vancouver Island is one of the loveliest places on earth, IMHO. Tofino and Chesterman's beach are magnificent, regardless of the weather conditions, but even more, when there is fog. It's been a much too long time, since I've been there, and I hope that the millions of tourists haven't loved it to death... When I was there I was lucky that Roy Henry Vickers was in town to host a "Story Teller" event. He shared interesting details of his own biography and told traditional stories from his ancestors (partly British, partly First Nations). It was a unique experience that I love to remember.
