kde5 slackware thread?
Just did kde5 via ktown in slackware 64 14.2 qemu vm, went so fast I couldn't believe it, big thank you Eric!
Is it worth having kde5 sticky thread for sharing kde5 things we run into or is it just better for every slackware user to fend for their self? Like "the option of having separate Plasma widgets on each virtual desktop is now gone". What Alien Bob said, this is a Plasma5 "support thread, flame wars are not tolerated and Plasma5 bashers should find another thread to vent their frustrations". |
I don't see the point in making such a thread sticky. Plasma5 is not even part of Slackware at the moment, and even if it were, it is only a part of the OS that not everyone will want to use.
There's nothing against a regular thread for people to assist each other with Plasma related questions though. And I guess you will have to make it very clear in your Original Post that you open a support thread, flame wars are not tolerated and Plasma5 bashers should find another thread to vent their frustrations... or else your thread is dead before even one page is filled. |
I like having Folder View widget next to the time in the taskbar/systray area with frequent apps.
I don't like desktop clutter and digging through start button to find frequent apps. When folder view is on desktop it can be resized but not when it's plugged into taskbar/systray. It has scroll bar to move through the apps, was able to resize with kde4. |
You realize that it works better if you report bugs, broken or missing functionality to the KDE bug tracker https://bugs.kde.org/ ? Perhaps something similar has already been reported so you can add your vote.
Unless you are not sure it is a bug that you encountered, or simply are looking for a setting or feature you have not yet discovered yourself and seek advice for. Sharing tips & tricks is a good use of this thread IMO. |
A bug (or at least issue) that seems to exist in Konqueror (still active as of Plasma 5.12.6) is that the process does not die upon closing of the app, and if you try to run "konqueror" again, it will silently fail.
If you go to Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> Performance, and uncheck "Always try to have one preloaded instance", apply, killall -9 konqueror, and then relaunch, the problem goes away. If you leave that option checked, as is the default, and launch konqueror in a controlling terminal and then try to relaunch, you'll see the following appear in your controlling terminal: Code:
QCommandLineParser: argument list cannot be empty, it should contain at least the executable name This is *not* Slackware/ktown specific and seems to be a known issue. See eg: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=142697 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1523082 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=894350 Similar bugs have also been reported to bugs.kde.org. I think the KDE devs have all but abandoned Konqueror (sure they recently ported to kde5, but I think that was more to get rid of qt4/kde4 deps than a genuine desire to improve Konq), so I doubt this issue will be fixed in the near future. This can be fixed system-wide by: Code:
cat << EOF > /etc/kde/xdg/konquerorrc |
Also I just wanted to say again... Plasma5 *rocks* on Slackware!
<RANT> I have been so out of the loop for so long, since I last used KDE5 in early 2015 when it was much buggier than it is now. I didn't realize that friggin' KDENLIVE was an official part of KDE now! That rocks. That alone is worth the price of admission for getting Plasma5 into current ASAP. 5.12.x is LTS; this is not some developer preview stuff. It is rock-solid, stable software. We're really doing the community a disservice in my view for not getting it to be part of mainline Slackware-current, and get as many people testing it as possible. Believe it or not, keeping it off-site on Alien's mirrors through ktown *is* a barrier to entry. Pushing to current would send a message to everyday -current users, look, it's OK now for you to get this on your machines and start using it as a daily driver. It's the only way we'll truly be able to more forward to a 15.0 release at some point in the near future. </RANT> |

As both a Plasma5 and XFCE user, the later feels much more Slackware-ish as I known. And I will never understand why someone would think that KDE or Plasma is a must to be in Slackware. It is fine and sound without the Plasma5 or KDE. Oh, and BTW, even the 5.12.6 LTS has the same issues with certain budget Radeon video cards, as described by me on https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...re-4175632470/ However, the 5.13.2 works with no artifacts and other graphics issues. Again. As bottom line, certainly the 5.12 LTS and even 5.13.x are not rock solid; maybe for 5.20.x I have some expectations. ;) |

Send them all to the KDE bug-tracker, man! |
Oh, and a useful tip:
IF you suspect that your Plasma5 applications does not show the bold characters where you suppose to be, you can fix that editing manually its configuration files from ~/config, looking for Code:

If you think it still have issues, report the bugs upstream and hopefully it will be resolved in the 5.12 LTS branches. There's no end of posting on several threads asking KDE 5 not to be included in next Slackware release. Sooner or later, Slackware has to move on from KDE 4. |

This thread will be flagged for a moderator to check, and I will accept the scalding because of the swearword, but honest to god, I wish your internet connection would just fail for a year, Darth Vader. |

After I got it all going, digging around for information led me to a lot of other distros and their bugs reports, problems, discussions. I'd rather hear from slackware people. I don't think my folder view observation is a bug, most likely something that got trimmed/tweaked by the developers as is different backgrounds for virtual desktops. I saw no need for activities but now I'm trying activities out. |
q5 5.9.6 added a bug that affected QMPlay2. It is not in 5.9.5 and it will be fixed in qt 5.9.7. That is all. Also when updating ktown do not forget to
Code:
slackpkg install ktown |
A fully removal utility for the unhappy Plasma5 and Qt5 users: plasma5cleaner
Code:
#!/bin/sh The power to make everyone happy stay in your own hand. You need only a small script. |

You know what else works, if you have slackpkg+ installed? Code:
slackpkg remove ktown Code:
slackpkg remove kde |
